Bob Symtherman

Generosity

Worthing's very own Town Crier Bob Smytherman is very generously donating his time to come and officially open our event!

Bob has been Worthing's Town Crier since 2014 when the role was re-introduced by the Worthing Town Centre Initiative. Bob regularly helps to promote the Town and its events and activities.

Historically, a town crier was an officer of the court who made public pronouncements as required by the court. The role developed to include making public announcements in the streets with the Criers dressing in elaborately decorated robes, white breeches, black boots and a tricorn hat.

Town Criers carry a handbell to attract people's attention, as they shout the words

"Oyez, Oyez, Oyez!"

before making their announcements. The word "Oyez" means "hear ye," which is a call for silence and attention. Oyez derives from the Anglo-Norman word for listen.

We are very grateful to have been given the opportunity to be able to take part in The Queen's Green Canopy (QGC) initiative. We are planning to plant these on Broadwater Green, dedicated to The Queen. The QGC aims to create a network of individual trees, avenues, copses and whole woodlands in honour of The Queen's service and legacy she has built.
